August '22

So we started the month with trucks rioting outside Arlington, causing a bit of disruption. Sometimes it’s like working in the wild west this side of the hood…

Our Rock Stardom moved to the last stage of her foster before her adoption . Now that she is physically fit and healthy, proper groundwork and schooling begins.

A Re-check on two adoptees , for AHS vaccinations, Looking fit and happy , just the way we like..

Two donkeys dewormed

A Complaint of Lame donkey sorted by a farrier visit.

Complaint received from Humansdorp of children hitting horses and riding too hard. Kids can be cruel , this is a big problem in that area, frustrated kids from bad home situations. A vicious cycle and very difficult to prosecute as they are all minors  Arghh!

Follow up injections for three days , of one of our adopted Tbs . Who somehow managed to almost slice her ear off. However healed very nicely with full movement.

Received a call from kwanobuhle about a donkey with a sore leg , When Stan collected realized it was broken so took straight to KKGP.

A property check for four of our donks unfortunately not suitable...

A complaint of horse been loaded with a broken, front leg. Then walked a considerable distance after casting itself in the box,  before putting the poor thing out of its misery. Apparently it was for the safety of the humans rescuing the animal, as the rural community would not have liked it to be PTS in their view, I mean Really !!! Sometimes I think the human race has no hope .. Humans putting themselves first all the freaking time. Have some compassion for Pete’s sake! Rather letter an animal suffer excruciating pain then offend our sensitive, little emotions…..Rant over for now.

Two more horses vaccinated for AHS.

Lion of Eden was surrendered to us, 4year old Tb, what a gorgeous boy, Available for Adoption .

First time horse owner frantic about her horse’s swollen eye and watering. Visited and looked like  j something minor caught in eye maybe. Told her to monitor and wipe twice /day with warm Epsom salts water or rooibos tea. Rather over react for nothing then sorry you didn’t ;) Came right in a day or two.

We then had the sad story of Riz, Mariza. To refresh from last month . She was returned due to parents splitting up. She started showing signs of depression/illness a few weeks after being admitted back to unit. After numerous vet visits and weeks of ups and downs in her condition temperature and behaviour. Not responding to meds. We finally lost her on the 6th. It was heart wrenching. She went into endotoxic shock , a very scary sight ,from who knows  and left us before we could put her out . Very confusing symptoms, took blood for West Nile Virus , encephalitis , biliary , you name it but all came back negative. We don’t know what happened, obviously something we could not detect. Trying to research what may have been, maybe  liver , block bile duct ? We just don’t know. I am so sorry for your suffering girl, you did not deserve that, if only we knew and could have relieved your pain sooner…  RIP precious child and know  you were deeply loved.

Two more horses vaccinated against AHS.

Finally had the last of the stallions camp reinforced . So should suffice for now..

AFRIKA inspecting the new reinforcement for the ‘Entire male ‘s enclosure. Looking for loop holes no doubt ;)

We had a complaint of very bad hooves which was luckily attended to before we could visit.

Then came Woman’s day .. What a lovely surprise ! The ladies from ‘The Paddock Challenge ‘ Wanted to do some physical labour for us, so thought ok , you can clean out pen 2 which has 16 years of ‘stuff ‘ piled in it. And that they did.. in under 2 hours!  These six ladies and two children got stuck in , supervised by a few patients/residents lol. Some useful items were discovered and rest chucked. Thank you ladies x  You make me proud to be one ..

The Donkey with huge flesh wound on rump, is healing slow but well . Worst definitely over.

Some urgent hooves at the unit were attended to..

Seven donkeys and one ponie’s  hooves  trimmed.

A pony that had gone walk about was found a few hours later.

Our feisty, little Lolly was adopted to a lovely, gentle young lady who just seemed to click with her. Lolly went so beautifully for her. Love it when a partnership is so immediately obvious. Go well you too x

Advised a girl about her two old tbs in the Western Cape.  Please make the right decision with your older animals. Heaven is also a home, a good one, where you will never need to worry about them again. There are just too many younger animals that need homes on a daily basis, don’t take that opportunity away from them. A horse making it into their twenties is a great achievement, let them go out with dignity rather than let them fade away slowly and miserably not knowing where they will end up next.  Please the suffering is on earth not in death.

Love My Bay was kind enough to interview and promote us on their page . Thank you LMB!

When a complaint turns into an adoption of one cute donkey ;) The same day the complaint was received ,the party involved had already done the right thing for their oldest friend and called us for  a companion. Go well Cassy darling, we will miss your kisses x

Complaint of horse not looking good moved to neighbouring farm for more grazing before I could assess.

Assisted a regular supporter with a gelding of a donkey and treatment thereafter.

Cape Willow was also adopted this month and delivered to her new home. So happy for you darling. The sweetest little filly. All the best to you x

Five donkeys and one pony’s hooves attended too..

Four more horses vaccinated for AHS

Then, a pony we had treated for ticks etc. was sold to one of our donkey adopters. One very happy daughter and even happier pony .Go well old girl, glad you are in safe hands now..

Next, the stray in Motherwell, who we managed to collect after some confusion . The poor thing was humanely euthanised due to compromised leg issues. RIP old boy..

A worried mom asked advice for her donkey, who was not behaving normally but no obvious signs of problem, this had been going on a few days and not getting better or worse. Suggested to her to get a vet and our lovely Dr Hilda from 9th Avenue and colleague, worked their magic and he was feeling better in no time! Thanks Ladies.

I popped in to see the Eventing Championships. It was great, luckily they had some sun for the X country on the Sunday. Well done to all I saw you were pros! Also our very Own Jupiter Symphony managed with a beautiful clear and ended up 6th in his division. Well done boy and mom, you guys are perfect together!

Jupiter Symphony

We assisted Animal Anti Cruelty League with some fodder for their pregnant mama sheep :)

Then got a call to please come check an old horse that was basically dropped off at someone for retirement . Luckily this individual cared and wanted to do the right thing. After assessing the horse was happy with the condition and advised on proper care but not to be ridden as looked to be very tender on spine. Around 20, luckily this boy did find a happy retirement home..

Our ‘Toledo Nights’ was adopted to a wonderful new home after 6 months foster care and schooling. Yay!!

Three more donkey hooves attended too..

Then call to help old ouma donkey who was down. It seems she was just not having a good day , feeling her age and maybe stood on a eina .. She is being monitored and looking a bit better but the cold is not kind to the aged. The kindest thing will be done when the time comes .. but for the meantime let’s hope for warmer weather..

An exciting request for two older boy donkeys who needed a retirement home. So we jumped to it and gelded our two oldest stallions,( paid for by adopter thankfully) and waiting for them to recover fully before taking the drive to their new ever after home.. YAY!!

New harnessing under way for Carties in Walmer..

Four more horses done for AHS.

Then had a call from a traditional race horse owner,  who wanted to surrender his gelding that was retiring from racing. Stan went to fetch and we welcomed “What a Prince” to the Unit. Beautiful boy, may be suitable for light hack only though. Still to be properly assessed..

Strays in uitenhage, owner contacted and collected.

Two more AHS vaccinations.

Stray donkeys on Kragga Kama road Identified and back home safely.

Assisted with retired old girl having bad bout of mange.. Treated and generous donation given Gratefully accepted ..

One more foster failure, lucky for the little mister Mickey though ;)

Lastly another nine donkey hooves trimmed.

That’s it for now, happy Spring and bring on the warmer weather already please :0
