A relatively quiet month for a change, Yay!
We started on a good note with our Dragon Flame who was surrendered to us with suspected kissing spine, was adopted to the perfect home. We waited a bit to X ray as money matters are tentative at the moment. But lone behold two angels on legs came to his rescue via initial interest in our other tb Lucky Luke.. Lucky seems to provide luck for others. (Lucky is still available for adoption by the way) Anyway they decided to take the boy who was less likely to be adopted, to use for and give therapy. Thank you Angels. Even better news few days down after having X rays it was discovered there is NO kissing spine . Woo Hoo!! So happy for you boy.
Two of Moses s donkeys booked themselves in to the unit for some RnR ;)
Complaint Received of pony with a bad, smelly wound. Owner contacted and pony visited. Put on strict cleaning duties and gave the necessary meds and tick treatment. Old girl. The older they are the more care they need guys please. Followed up through month and much better now.
Complaint received of horses out on boundary lane, relevant parties contacted and resolved hopefully.
Then a complaint received of four horses out in greenbushes area. As we got there, the owner arrived to fetch. Once again big problem in that area with fencing theft. A wound on one horse being closely monitored as owner wants to try themselves before having to hand over to us...
Another Old man retired from the township, but still entire. So home with no mares required!
Three cross breeds collected and moved to new home.
Two donkeys surrendered to the Unit, Cassy and Rocky. Mare and Gelding, now too looking for a home..
Complaint received of two very skinny ponies. After visiting owner, made aware that they were brought in from karoo, where there are lots of skinnys, to fatten and back. Will advise first next time. Please note if the other horses on the premises are in acceptable condition, there is usually a good reason for it.
Recheck on 12 tbs and 1 crossbreed - acceptable.
Hooves of 9 donkeys done.
One of our old adopted girls had to be sent over the rainbow bridge. RIP sweetheart.
Another 14 rabies jabs given.
So we used to go to Grahamstown to do health care clinics once a month a few years ago until they stopped coming on our planned dates , which made it very costly and a waste of time for us. The contacts we had are long gone, we have tried to organise with the SPCA there to try get something going again, but to no avail. We received a complaint about a donkey cart that side recently and are pleading to anyone who knows any of these guys to get in touch with us to see how what we can do to get things going again.
Hooves of another 9 donkeys and 2 horses. Tick
Then a stray out on Kraggakama road late Friday afternoon, by the time I got there already quite a crowd but luckily recognized horse and contacted owner. He has been out a few times before. Hopefully this the last time.
Then we got a special request from and older donkey owner from Langa Township. Please ma can we come collect their three old ladies that have now retired from cart work. The elderly couple did not want to sell then to the youngsters in the area as they knew they would not care for them properly and it was time they retired . Tom and I jumped at it straight away and collected them on the Sunday morning. Thank you ma and Ta for being so caring and compassionate. Thankfully a little over two weeks later they were adopted to their new retirement home by a kind and willing carer.
Ok, so after all the new fencing, next to clear all those massive , spiky stumps in the girls camp. Thanks to Menno for doing it for us at a reduced price of course ;)
Our two little, darling orphans, aka the ‘rabies babies’ were finally adopted into a wonderful grassy heaven! They went together with sweet foster moms, Molly and Muffin, who are staying to help show them the ropes and help with all the delicious grass.. Will miss these little darlings so much! Below: Orphans, Madamn and Fifi with their new best friend

We finally managed to geld a boy who was trying very hard to be a rig, thankfully the universe did not agree and both balls removed after late decent.. Very well behaved too, with eyelashes like Cleopatra!
After receiving confirmation of positive rabies results for the two donkeys that passed in the Sardinia Bay area, two more donkeys vaccinated on owners request. We can’t emphasize this enough, PLEASE VACCINATE ALL your animals against Rabies!!
Another lovable boy coming from the township looking for a home!
Tyre punctures are a regular occurrence in this job. Fixed free of charge by Best Drive in sixth Ave Walmer, who always help us out. Thank you guys!
Panic call from a lady who’s horse buckled, but soon seemed to be a harmless incident..
All donkeys at Unit vaccinated against Tetanus, another dreaded disease, that is easily prevented with vaccinations.
Two of our donkeys had to be moved to a new home after new puppy causing too much havoc. All good, new home much more grazing anyway..
Then when delivering the two donks to new home, Alfred and Myself got SERIOUSLY stuck in an un even, wet persistent piece of ground. Luckily only after we had delivered the donkeys safe and sound, But OMG and hour and a half! I suspect the Isuzu would have handled better than our old skorro Colt. None the less we managed to slightly damage the horsebox in the process. After losing my faith in the people driving past without stopping our rescuers arrived in the form of Ann, Gavin and Dean! Thank you guys, a jack was what we needed and a stronger vehicle to tow us out. After Ann pulled the box out and Dean jacked up the box, Gavin decided he would take the box home to repair for us free of charge. Blessings.
One of our adopters looking for a donkey companion, decided to take on a foster project as well and take on one of our Tbs to help bring him on and give him a better chance at finding the right home. Thank you earth angel ;)
A complaint re Moses’ donkeys at the airport, tied up and no water. Explained that he is adhering to the munciple bylaws by tying and does give them water everyday!
Lastly our Rock Stardom is doing extremely well in her new foster home, so watch this space..
Well that’s pretty much it for now,
Till next time
Carla
