Well it seems the silly season has started early this year or did it ever stop? We have had four break -ins over a period of two weeks. After not replacing the few items they originally stole, they ended up taking apart our office from all the scrap metal to our electrical cables and plugs. I am so writing this in a coffee shop using their electricity point, I mean this is now War!! Luckily, Mitchell Harrington (CAPE GARAGE DOORS) really came to our rescue on request of the Animal Welfare management and installed a SUPER security door at our stables. We have needed this for years!!! Thank you SO SO MUCH We have also now bricked up the one window that they kept coming through and in the process of getting beefy burglar bars installed on the last window. A total of seven locks we now wade through every morning, sad but true. .. We do have to mention how grateful we are for all the angels that work tirelessly to assist us. It does however feel like this dilemma has taken up most of our month to be honest.
Three more horses vaccinated for Rabies
Five township donkeys dewormed and vaccinated for rabies.
Then our Rock Stardom finally found her forever home with a lady that followed her story from day one. It was all just meant to be. They clicked immediately. Thank you to absolutely everyone that assisted with her magnificent transformation. We delivered her safe and sound to her new green paradise. Go well Rock Star, you are truly one for real X
Stan went to advise and assist with one of the traditional races in Idutywa. Accompanied by trainees from NHA, turned out to be a very interesting visit for all.
A second baby donkey was born in one of our foster homes, congratulations precious one!
Nine donkey hooves done and one pony
Another 23 horses vaccinated against Rabies
A little bump on a pony s shoulder turned out to be harmless..
Then our beautiful Bull Run was sent returned to the Unit. The adopter is now older and so is he, needing a bit more TLC to keep him happy in his golden years. He will be available for adoption but it will have to be a VERY special home as that is one VERY special Horse ;)
A very lucky little Tiny was delivered to his new home in the nick of time! He will be a special companion to a rather large, anxious friend.
The wonderful ladies from NEDBANK Paddock Challenge organised a Watertank and all the fittings to be connected to our Shelter. Just in case that dreaded D day ever Comes . Thank you NEDBANK
We then had an early morning call-out on a Sunday. A stray horse next to the highway at Kinkelbos. Unfortunately /Fortunately, depending on which way you look at it, we were alerted halfway there to say there was no loose stray horse. All horses in the area were safe behind fencing .
Thankfully someone let us know before we actually got all the way there. Saving petrol is unfortunately a continuous concern for us.
Two more donkeys dewormed
Our Isuzu had to go in to get rust fixed as we were being rained on while driving.
Five more donkey’s hooves done.
The Beautiful Duke was gelded after all necessary vaccines administered. So should be good to go soon just have to ride the fellow now..
A complaint about a yard breeding horses irresponsibly, with stallions causing problems with other youngsters. Visited and given warning but UNFORTUNATELY there is no law stating you cannot breed horses as much as I wish there was !!! Please note: stallions are all hormones when mares are around, they can be very dangerous to humans and other horses, especially when put in the same camp.
First time horse owners looking for advice, good thing they brought a book with.. lol..;)
Then the story of The Don. We received a plea for help re a stray, lone horse that was spotted among the game grazing at the Darlington Dam. North of the Addo Elephant park . They arranged to keep him in a smaller safer area till we came to collect. A Looooooong drive later we got there safe and sound. Never Seen the Darlington Dam before, huge! Stan and the guys went to collect the horse while I waited outside the Park with the horsebox. The terrain was too mountainous for our vehicles. What a handsome horse came around the corner wow! A beautiful big chestnut gelding, in relatively good condition actually. Beautiful though, so beautiful that the lady who came to visit the day we admitted him to the Unit decided to take him home the next day.. and Kindly covered our petrol costs too.. Shew… Anyway he is in safe caring hands for now and may be up for adoption at a later stage but for now all very happy where he is.
Our suspected Snake Bite Victim was starting to heal beautifully after stronger antibiotics but then a kick in that same leg set him back a few .. Eish.. Still after thorough cleaning and Epsom salts bandaging it looks like it’s finally on track. Almost three months later.
Five more Donkey hooves done and one crossbreed
The little mini, Lily, that came in a few weeks ago with her old, blind dad found the perfect kind and gentle adopter, or should I say he found her.. We couldn’t have asked for a better home for the little thing. For a mini, she is a really good little child ;) All the best sweetheart makes our hearts so warm to know you are in such a happy home.
Dewormed three more Jacks.
The grey mare that was supposedly pregnant seems to not be, which is fine too, as allows her to move to her forever home earlier than later..
Complaint Received from Addo . Contact made but getting there is proving difficult whilst sorting all the other issues..
Organised 7 x AHS vaccines for lady up north that couldn’t get any.
Our Little, definitely Pregnant Brie, was offered a dream holiday vacation over the Christmas period. Boy I can just picture her Christmas baby being born in a stable of fresh shaving s and frolicking in green grass with her. Makes our hearts smile knowing where she came from and all her hardships in the past. Thank you Foster Mom for making it all happen!
A complaint received of an older TB by herself managed to find a new home before we could go collect her, So hope all will be well..
Our Dearest Donovan, The Dentist, came to give old Bull run a once over. Just to prep for his golden years. Thank you Donovan for always being willing to help our equine friends we appreciate you so much xx

Another Birthday party celebrated with the kids at the unit. They loved all the carrots and treats Thank you !
Another complaint about Moses’ donkeys tied to trees and no water. Yes he does give them water
Our Horsebox then decided to lose its bearings or hubs or something .. So in to fix before we could take our Dakota to her new home.. Sorry for the wait girl but better safe than not at all!
Two more horses done for AHS , yes late in year but this year has been a struggle indeed.
Well I think that’s it. From all of us at the Unit we wish you a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a safe NEW YEAR! See you in 2023
