To start, two of our wonderful volunteers Brett and Sonja, organised and supervised a little visit to the UNIT for the children at Mosaic in Walmer. They thoroughly enjoyed it and definitely learned a thing or two.
Our friendly, little Misty that was collected from Uitenhage a little whole ago was adopted to a new home and family to be a companion to a lonely little boy (gelding obviously)
Then the slightly entertaining incident of a horse that was sadly returned to us , accompanied by a lot of tears. We are quite used to this by now , that sometimes they don’t find their forever home but then 4 days later, the owner decided that they had made the wrong decision and couldn’t bare to leave him so came all the way back to fetch him again. Good to know some people really do have a conscience ;)
Another eight horses vaccinated for AHS. Last for this season.
Finally our long - standing complaint of almost a year - A horse struggling with massive sarcoids was finally sent to God after our vet visited and insisted that it was time. This type of thing is very difficult to come to terms with, we do understand this but please believe death is not a punishment but a relief. We know it’s difficult to make that decision for your ‘Child’ but please be strong for them. RIP sweet boy. No more pain and suffering.
We were then asked to collect a colt, Indigo, with a sway back. This can be a birth defect in young horses involving tendon and muscle complications of the back. This owner responsibly decided to rather surrender the boy to us as she was not sure and worried where he would end up. A sway back is not a death sentence and can be easily managed and worked with in knowledgeable, caring hands. Thank you for thinking of his future and doing the right thing. Indigo has since been gelded and is available for adoption. Very sweet friendly pony. See Below: INDIGO Available for Adoption

Still visiting and working on the elderly owner who can’t let go just yet, she is however making more effort now though.
We dropped off a bag of milk for our first orphaned baby Roo. When we visited his first class foster home , we found him strutting his stuff in his new paddock with companion like a real stud. Thank you Nicky you are doing a superb job!
The silly season has unfortunately also started and we were called to go and assist with a young donkey foal who had been attacked badly by dogs. Well what a saddening sight, the owner initially only wanted us to take the baby but we obviously took the mother too, who was not in great condition herself either. Very emotional pick up but took the little angel straight to 9th Avenue vets where it was a touch and go but they decided to operate . The little darling pulled through narrowly as the dogs had missed her jugular artery by 2mm. Returned to her mom at the unit with a drip and drain in tow and a fresh bed of shavings. After two weeks of intensive care , we are thrilled to announce that she has made a wonderful recovery after a month now . Little Billy and her mom , Believer, will also be up for adoption soon . Billy you are an amazing little creature, we are so glad you are still with us!
One of our older retirees felling a little extra old .. but all good after a check up.
Some concern over a TB having lost a lot of weight over this past winter, but owner acknowledged the problem, accepted advice and willing to make changes, just how we prefer. Follow up visit set.
Four donkey’s hooves attended too.
Then another orphaned donkey foal from uitenhage, lost his mom in a car accident. We collected the little boy of roughly 4 months, timid but very happy to be around some caring aunties at the Unit. Settled in nicely now and getting friendlier each day.
Two stolen horses up north in Tsolo. Unfortunately not too much we can do from this side. Advised the owner/police to get a vet / Inspector to scan for microchips, best option.
Another call from Uitenhage to assist a boy with what seemed to be a broken leg, a broken leg it was. We carefully loaded and sent him to God after some nice fresh lucern. Sorry for your suffering boy, I wish we could have gotten to you earlier. RIP strong boy.
Our Iceman and Teddy were adopted by their committed new donkey owner. Lots of grass and some cows as companions. Go well boys, glad you have all that grass!
Our little Smegal was adopted to a happy home with lots of friends, such a sweet little chap. All the best boy!
A property check for some donkeys, advised for better fencing first however.
A complaint of a wild donkey in the veld with broken leg , trying to organize a crush camp to catch as very vast open space. Surprisingly moving pretty fast on three legs.
Sixteen more donkey’s hooves trimmed
A complaint of two donks with long hooves were approached and duelly sorted by Stan.
Some more concern over horses in a riding school, will be monitored. Not too bad though.
Three of our donkeys were surrendered back to us after causing too many fly issues .. at least a compensatory donation was given in lieu . Thanks Guys
One lame donkey and 8 other’ s hooves trimmed.
A concern over hind leg wound, not too bad, sorted in a week or two.
Another bad case from Uitenhage. Bobby, the burn victim. Severly burned by either hot water/oil or fire, or all of the above as different stages of burn wounds as well. This id probably one of the worst burn cases we have seen , he must have been in so much pain. It never cease to amaze how tolerant donkeys can be toward pain . I do believe if a horse were to have those same wounds they would not have made it. Any way bobby is reacting well to treatment. Thank you, Susan, Sonja and Ashliegh for donating toward his recovery with meds etc. A long road ahead , but am sure he will be well enough to be rehomed in a couple of months.
Then a very kind Donation of a free gelding from Dr Kat Davis. Thank you so much DR Kat GRATELY APPRECIATED.
Finally we managed to Sedate our Lovin You Baby, to leave to her new home where she settled in perfectly. See it wasn’t so bad Nana! She totally freaked out in the box a month prior, injuring herself and delaying her move.
We have received a lot of Donations this month and wanted to say a huge thank you to all those who donated, you know we couldn’t do this without you!
