We started the month with a market day kindly organized by Shannon from Isithatha Theatre, no 12 9th Ave Walmer. Very nice location, live music and a lot of fun! Thank you Shannon.
We received a complaint of horses on the greenbushes road, eating on the verge. Luckily we found the owners quickly, thank s to social media. The horses belonged to the property nearest that particular verge. Theft of fencing in the greenbushes area is a real problem and the cause for the animals getting out.
We sadly lost our beautiful Bobby, the burn victim, to a twisted colon. He was treated four days in a row and we really thought he was out the woods but on the fourth day the vet made the call. A very sad day indeed. He had come so far and 50 percent of his burn wounds were healed, so to lose him to colic 5 months later really hit us hard. Rest In Peace sweet boy. We are so grateful to have loved and known you and your love. Very hard with colic you just never really know. Coming from the townships it is most likely he had some sort of enterolith(intestinal stones) that had developed from the past.
We delivered the handsome Indigo to a foster mom who needed a companion for her mare off the track. Love at first sight for all involved. Go well boy, enjoy the grass!
The last Elderly lady of a difficult case was kindly sent to God. All together now Rest In Peace Ladies. Thank you Carli and Terry for making it a smooth transition.
Delivered our little Sugar Pie to her new foster home. We have a lot of donkeys at the moment so appreciating any fosters we can get. Very happy and settled in her new life of luxury. Enjoy special one. X
Five donkey hooves and six ponies’ hooves trimmed.
We received a complaint about a horse in Adeleide that was very thin and Mangy. After contact was made with the property owner, who happened to be a vet, yes you read that correctly, a vet. It was established that the horse was in it’s late 20s. After the owner of the horse was called in and no doubt was horrified, the decision was made to euthanase. Rest in Peace boy, we are sorry they took so long to make the descision. PLEASE NOTE : If you have an old horse ‘somewhere’ that is retired, keep a check on it! On a regular basis. You have to monitor and make the decision before it gets so bad that people have to report you in order to do the kindest thing. We see it far too often. They don’t deserve to be left in the field to die!
A complaint of a thoroughbred far north, being lame. Stan spoke with the owner over the phone on how to treat and monitor the horse going forward. A very rural area, proving slightly difficult.
We have had a bad stretch of fires in the last month or two month, this time it was very close to the Unit which left us without electricity for 4 days. Let’s hope the recent rains now puts a stop to them.
A request to come out and vaccinate three very friendly donks in Seaview against rabies. No halters no fuss , quick sticks, didn’t even know it had happened. It helps so much when the animals are handled and have a good trusting relationship with their carers. And no we have been told by our vets and the state vet that we do not need to vaccinate donkeys against AHS. Please also be advised Vaccinations for AHS should only be carried out from June to October.
A complaint of horses being abandoned on a game farm. With no definite facts, it is difficult to investigate when animals appear to be in acceptable condition.
Another complaint of horses being abandoned on a farm, with no rent paid for three months. Please be advised, we need as much information as possible reporting these cases and If the animals are in ok condition, it is actually a domestic issue.
Eight donkeys and one horses hooves tendered to.
The Handsome, stocky grey, Chilli, that everyone was interested and is now up for adoption. He still needs to be backed so if you have the knowledge and the knowhow, you are welcome to apply.
A property check for the lady Dewdrop is underway and will hopefully be adopted within the week . Yay!! Crossing Fingers.
Another complaint received of a 30 year old horse not looking good. Decision must be made before winter. We have had a lot of euthanasias lately, enough already! Lets hope it slows down a bit and please note WE DO NOT enjoy euthanasing your animals but we will be there for them if you are NOT or cant.
Five horses out on old Cape road again. Yes I am sure some of you can guess who. By the time we got there they were safely back in their property.
A complaint received of a horse for sale on facebook. It was thought it could have been stolen. Please be advised that you cannot just accuse someone of selling a stolen horse with no further information. IE If you have an owner who has had a horse stolen and they think that the horse advertised in the post is theirs. This accusation can be very serious.
Our Boy Silver, finally got adopted but not to the originally planned, none the less, adopted to a good home with lots of mates. Go well Handsome!
ANOTHER surrender of three donkeys was thankfully averted. Thankfully.
Our boy Nimcha, who was kindly fostered and brought on by one of our kind foster moms, has moved over to his forever home. He is totally besotted with his new mom and she him. All the best for your future together you two ;)
Three more donkeys that were surrendered thankfully went off to The Herd Sanctuary to give us some breathing space. Lots of green grass, a dam and wonderful carers. Thank you Sara!
Three more donkeys and five ponies hooves trimmed.
Our Little orphan, Roo, was old enough to be gelded and done, literally , chop chop lol ;) Thank you Nicky and Dr Kat. He is too gorgeous for words.., don’t you think ? SEE PHOTO:

A donkey with Colic. Advised to get a vet asap. Vet arrived and treated straight away and sorted out the problem . Please rather get a vet out straight away if your equid is not eating or drinking. Their chances are a lot better so rather be safe than sorry.
Then Lastly, quite shocking to be honest. A beautiful stallion, with serious injuries, being kept alive for his sperm. Apparently his bloodline is more important than the horse himself. All the money in the world does not give you the right, no. No more details available as a cruelty case is under way.
Till next time
Carla
