What a month! Started off with one gelding of one very good boy. Behaved impeccably.

Our gorgeous little orphan, Roo, was collected from foster mom and taken to his new family of Donkeys with fellow orphan, Hendriek and his two aunties. Aged a month apart there will be some serious gaming going on ;) Thank you Nikki and Sonja for taking such good care of these precious little ones.

Jackson’s Cart had a breakdown on Victoria Drive.  The guys went to assist and tow back to Unit. Until fixed.

Five donkeys and two ponie’s Hooves trimmed.

The two’ Oupas’ who have officially retired from Cart work, have been delivered to their new retirement home and super happy to see all the green grass. Thank you Veronique! We are so happy they have you to care for them in their golden years.

Seven more Donkeys hooves tendered to.

Two lame donkeys one with a nail in the hoof another with an abscess. Thanks Stan for sorting ASAP.

More Great news, a home for our Daisy and Pepsi. Off to live their best days at a beautiful private sanctuary with three other Jennies and lots of wildlife. All the best darlings XX

Another two hoof abscesses sorted by Stan.

A complaint of very old Mare, on her last days. We were however assured that she gets fed extra, blanketed and also has an overseeing vet which has been confirmed.

A Fat little stray on Sardinia bay road ;) Luckily Harvey was only a few hundred meters from his home. We managed to get him back safe and sound with a team effort from passerby and owner.

Then a botched gelding, that was carried out by a layman ie NOT A VET!! Unbelievable. We were called out to euthanase the next morning. Poor boy had to wait the whole night before finding relief. PLEASE NOTE: If you are having your horses gelded by anyone other than a vet, you are breaking the law. You WILL be held accountable and you will face the consequences. CASE OPENED. See you in court.

A Donkey stray in Despatch, unfortunately we couldn’t get there in time.

A very upset adopter had to return two horses to Unit as they had no water left to give them. Living off the grid, at a difficult gradient and far from any amenities. The poor mom was distraught  but safe at Unit with water for now . They will however be returned after the rains thank heavens.

One of the abandoned ponies was gelded. Just in time and at our expense of course.

An inland trip to Jansenville to tend to a donkey with a bad abscess and hooves of both trimmed. Owner happily paid for the fuel as well. Thank you Willie.

A recheck on a stubborn complaint still not happy and will keep monitoring closely.

Six more donkeys being surrendered and delivered to us all the way from Cathcart. Probably in the next month or two.

A concerned complaint over a TB that was looking horrendous. After visiting and inspecting the horse the next morning, it was agreed that the kindest thing to do for that horse would be to euthanase, same as the attending vet had advised earlier that week. Then, strangely, after more discussions between the owner and the same vet the decision was then made to give the animal another chance. So as long as a Veterinarian is overseeing the animal our hands are relatively tied. Weekly check-ups are the best we can do and if the horse’s condition deteriorates we will push further, even though surprisingly this vet prefers not to work with us. Five other horses belonging to the same owner were also checked the same day with concerning results. Closely monitoring this case…

Another recheck on 18 crossbreeds at a yard where breeding and geldings take place. All acceptable for now.

Two more donkeys dewormed and hooves trimmed.

A recheck done on an ongoing complaint found three ponies without food and water, with two confined in unacceptable conditions. After we called a vet in, it was arranged to euthanase the smallest child asap. Rest in Peace little one. You did not deserve to suffer for so long. Pure Neglect and no remorse by owner. This is NOT ACCEPTABLE! Another cruelty case opened. SEE PHOTO:

Then a different complaint of sorts. PLEASE NOTE: It is NOT Illegal to euthanase your own animal, especially if it has been suggested by a vet . So long as it is humanely done there is nothing we can do as a welfare organisation. First world countries may operate differently but not us here in SA. We as welfare organisations are not the law makers but are abiders thereof.

One of our Tbs came down with a virus. The vet suspected EEV (Equine Encephalosis Virus) Did not display any straightforward symptoms, just high temperature and abnormal behaviour. Anyway lasted 5 days and now good to go. It is a good idea to give your Tbs immunity supplements through winter. This will help to keep them strong and resistant. They can be such sensitive children. Rather prevent issues, especially if they have or are going through a big change and therefore stress.

Two more horses’ hooves trimmed.

Another donkey and pony with an abscess, poor children. Sorted.

Lastly another complaint of a horse that was in a very bad way. After visiting just after their vet euthanasia was arranged for the following day.

Hope everyone managed to cast their vote. BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE.

Till next time.

Carla
