August ' 25

Started the month with a lovely foster home for one of our youngsters, Phantom. Go well boy enjoy your new companion Blitz the new waterhole and green grass! ;)

A complaint received of a yard not returning the horses blankets they removed. Really guys we are not here to solve civil matters, a horses welfare yes, but not ‘he said she said’ arguments.

A complaint of roaming horses in Craddock. Unfortunately we cannot collect all the stray equines in Eastern Cape. If the animal is injured or has been contained for seven days with no owner collecting, then yes.

Then a complaint of 8 horses been relocated to neighbours property overnight. The civil thing to do would be to let your neighbours know whats happening but otherwise allowed as long as horses are fed, watered and sheltered.

One lame donkey sorted.

One stray donkey that has been out on the road for months in uitenhage was finally contained so we could bring him in. No more gallivanting for you boy.

Two donkeys and two horses hooves trimmed.

Two horses vaccinated for AHS.

A call for help from an owner who can’t keep his ponies in so wanted to rather surrender them to us. Staff collected, dewormed and admitted to unit.

One big boy Ben gelded, put up a fight but all gone ;)

A concerned owner needing reassurance that it was time to finally give up the fight on her beloved horse whos’ sarcoid was now beyond repair. Thank you for asking for guidance and trying the way you did. Rest in Peace sweet boy L

Eight donkeys and four horses’ hooves tendered to.

We then had a visit from our lovely Manager at Highveld Horse Care Unit who helped us tremendously with getting the ‘offices’ at the unit cleaned and ready for a revamp after assisting us with the relevant proposal. Thank you Tereza! You were a Godsend and we will miss you, unless you come back soon ;)

Recheck and deworming of two donkeys.

Another eight donkey’s hooves done.

Once again issues with yards and no valid contracts signed. This makes it very difficult for us to get involved unless certain procedures and lawyers letters are in place. Please make sure you have all clients sign the relevant contracts before taking on any horses.

Another complaint against a so called ‘Sanctuary” in PE who have once again caused concern with lack of feeding and necessary attention. After contacting the manager at the time it was found that food and water was available on inspection but the way forward is uncertain. Unfortunately three of the older horses had to be PTS in the following days to come. Rest in Peace sweet souls. The  ‘directors’ of this ‘Sanctuary’ are making things very murky and difficult which raises many concerns, however currently there is a new manager in place who is keeping things under control. The situation is being monitored until the process of rehoming the animals has taken place. Let’s hope this time all will be resolved. Until the necessary intervention is required, we will be keeping a close eye.

Then a call late at night for an old donkey that was down and couldn’t get up. After no improvement the old soul was sent to God with pressure from our side after inspection. Please note if an old horse or donkey is down and cannot get up by itself anymore, it is time..

Two more horses vaccinated for AHS

Unfortunately two of our sweet donkeys had to be returned, we collected them collect and admitted to Unit. Sweetest Mom and son now available for adoption, again :(

A complaint of very long donkey hooves sorted.

Unfortunately a recheck on one of our adopted ponies, called for a bit of alarm. Not looking good. If not improved after dewormer may have to bring him back. Please understand we adopt our animals in good faith but if we see our animals deteriorating we take them back. Finish and Klaar.

Little Mullies and Milla were adopted to their new home to be companions to a lovely  growing  herd and excited young man.See photo of the gorgeous Mullies with her new bff

Our sweet girl Tortola was adopted by her besotted new mom . So happy for you darling . Enjoy the spoils!

Three more donkeys and three horses’ hooves trimmed

A recheck and deworming of 6 donkeys and I horse - good.

A complaint of a very shaggy looking horse seems to just be an odd winter coat for now. No not Cushings disease.

A recheck on two horses and donkey in acceptable condition.

A property check for donkeys passed with flying colours. Hope to send two deserving souls there soon!

A call for assistance after a donkey rejected her new born foal. Thankfully the donkey received some of the life giving colostrum so after getting the proper foals milk powder(Denkavit) the foal is healthy and strong. Well done Mel!

An adoption of one of our stray ponies worked out very well . Happy for you Chessie J

A surrender of another pony with bad eating habits. Admitted to Unit.

A case of Donkey owners taking in three donkeys that were constantly out in the road became a bit of a civil issue as the correct procedures were not carried out Ie, No report at police station. Please remember if you take a stray animal in you need to go to the nearest police station within 24hrs to get an IB or OB number and advertise on community groups or media to find the owner. If no owner claims within seven days then you are legally covered.

A complaint received of an underweight horse. After inspection and dewormer and discovering the horse was very old the owner agreed to get vets assessment if dewormer and extra pertinent feed does not help.

A Recheck on 6 horses acceptable.

Another case of concerned citizen taking in a stray donkey , advised correct procedure which they did. Owner came forward to claim the donkey.

A generous donation from East Cape Showing ! Almost 3k Thank you so much guys! J

Three horses and 3 donkeys dewormed and hooves tendered too.

One of our adopted ponies had a very bad abscess which caused severe swelling of his leg. Thankfully on the mend now but very scary as had no idea what it was initially. Abscesses can cause severe symptoms and are especially painful but as long as treated by a vet sooner than later usually completely heal.

Six more horses vaccinated for AHS.

A request to assist with a dog bitten donkey thankfully turned out to be a lot better than most of the attacks we have seen.

A request for very overgrown hooves to be trimmed on two donkeys on R75 – Sorted

Till next time

Carla
