April '22

Ok so here we are, almost halfway through the year already. All I can say is enough with the public Holidays already!! Work needs to get done.. for crying in a bucket..(Ala Megan ;)

A colic scare early in the morning, turned out to be the easiest colic the vet ever had to deal with. I told the owner to give the horse some Epsom salts and water via mouth, as this usually works through the stomach quickly releasing any simple blockages. So just as vet arrived, the horse passed out a plastic bag. Then just like that horse back to normal. Shew! We often dose the donkeys that come in from the townships with a dose of Epsom salts water to help clean out their system. Often plastic in their pooh.

A much-loved big girl was returned to us due to unforeseen events but luckily found another good home in under two weeks which was great news. Two things I feel I need to mention regarding this case: When we collected the horse, who was a very big girl, might I add. She was very nervous to load. We had two or three experienced hands and one or two not so much. Please take note the less experienced and more anxious you are in a situation like this , the more likely it for accidents to happen and someone to get hurt. Yes everyone wants to show the world how much they know about horses, but at the end of the day the horse’s well-being and that of our staff are of most importance. Horses are big animals and it’s no joke how people can get hurt during these tense scenarios, so best to leave it to the most experienced/calmer individuals.. Secondly: The lady who had loved and spoilt this girl over the previous years stayed strong for her and came to visit her every day at the unit until she went to her new home. This was so noticeable in the horse’s general demeanor. Seeing her mom every day really helped her to adapt so much easier and comforted her like you won’t believe. I just want to take my hat off to you Shereen for doing this for your girl. You made the transition so much better for her. Thank you x

Then the wonderful Mastertons group of yummy coffee makers have got a very exciting bag of coffee in the works, will be available at Grass Roof in the near Future.. Not going to say too much, but watch this space… ;)

Ten horses and ten donkey hooves done, with deworming to those that needed.

We then collected a surrendered tb, who could not seem to find a home. The sweetest boy, with an impressive past. Welcome Dragon Flame. One or two complications, but soon to be available to the right person..

Another complaint against another yard, followed up and will look a little deeper.

A beautiful tb surrendered off the track, Nimcha, available soon just want to ride him first..

A new born baby donkey that was born in a back yard in Uitenhage, collected and taken in for safe keeping ..

A pony that kept on getting out had community up in arms. Please Note: if your animal gets out of your property and causes and accident of any sort you are legally liable for the damage!

Seven horses and seven donkeys hooves tended to and rechecked.

Then finally our new fencing is underway and almost finished actually.. So exciting.. Not perfect post and rail but safe and strong! Woo hoo! Been a long time coming. Thanks to Marizanne and all the sponsors of materials.

Our sweet little Ha Penny was adopted to a loving new home. Go well girl you deserve this special home!

Assistance with a ‘chronic’ stray. Please remember if you take in any animal off the street, go straight to the nearest police station to report. Get proof of the report to cover yourselves.

Lady concerned her horse is too fat! Lol just fat grass belly after all the rains..

Another horse needs to be surrendered as left on a sold property collecting soon.

A long forgotten foster was adopted in a surprise twist which seemed to work out perfectly for both parties.. Blu, enjoy your new venture Boy!!

Three horses treated for ticks.

Old boy at retiremnt home finally crossed over. RIP sweet boy..

Two orphaned rabies babies found a lovely home and leaving soon. Will miss the little madams ;)

Our Little Basil was adopted by a longstanding supporter. Enjoy life with the boys boy ;)

Unfourtunately four of our donkeys had to be returned , So once again off to collect in two trips . MJ, Miss Jackson, Micky and Kat are all looking for their forever homes again?! Hopefully will just split them in twos , to stay together if possible. Shohh a lot of surrenders this month!

The fun EC Competitive Trail Riding (DRASA) event was a great success regardless of the rain. Thank you for the wonderful donation guys!

After all the good rain there was a laminitic donkey who needed some extra careful consideration..

We had a very handsome Golden Boy come visit for a few days between lifts. Lovely to meet you sir ;)

Then we have our Rock Star, AKA Rock Stardom. She is the skinny girl we brought in at the end of March. As we worked with her treating the infected tick damage on hind daily , we noticed her whole leg swelling although her wound was healing, a little confused, we carried on until one morning the swelling had localized on her inner thigh. After lots of experience in this line, we realised it was an abscess. See second pic below. First pic original issue.

We ruptured with sterilised needle and it started to pour out poor girl, it was so painful. After cleaning, draining and trotting her to help flush quicker, the next day her leg had gone down considerably and walking with so much less pain. Must say very satisfying for all of us. She improved quickly after that and soon enough, just short of a month after collecting her, she was ready to go to foster home for grazing and more exercise. Below: First pic -Day we collected her 29/3/22.  Second pic -day delivered to her foster home 26/4/22. Thanks to all those angels that donated toward her and gave her extra tlc while she was with us. Looking forward to your future precious child, you only deserve the best!

Our Midnight, outgrown by his previous rider has found him a new home with another little companion. All going very well with his new four legged companion too! Happy for you boy. Sometimes change is good they say.. ;)

Then sadly we had to collect our Lucky Luciano from his previous adopter as well due to the usuals.. Collected, admitted and already has interest.

We were then very perturbed to hear of two donkeys passing in one week at same resident.. Sample taken from state vet, and waiting to hear results.. strange.. hoping not Rabies . PLEASE VACCINATE ALL YOUR PETS (Mammals)FOR RABIES!

With now also have two elderly gentlemen of walmer, finally retiring from the  cart business, They have served their owners well and his has agreed to retire them from the cart. Some of you may remember the infamous Rich, he and his friend, Yster will be looking for their own retirement home. If you can assist please let us know.

One more hoof abscess tended too by the man Stan,

And finally our life Blood has gone to his new home after waiting four  long months after his gelding. He left with his new companion. Loaded well and travelled well! Yay! Great  things to come from that boy I am sure. Will miss you too big boy, all the best x

Well  till next time and less public holidays..
