A very exciting month for us actually J With the help of Tereza, from Highveld and our wonderful sponsors, HOLLYWOODBETS, we are undergoing much needed renovations, not only on our shelters but ‘offices’ too. Funding for a brand new vehicle is also a part of the deal, woohoo! We are super excited. Thank you HOLLYWOODBETS! We have been using our existing tired vehicle, (Suzi) as our office for the meantime, slightly annoying at times but oh so worth it ;) We are truly blown away to be blessed with this opportunity to grow and uplift the unit in the upcoming years. Basil, you and the HOLLYWOODBETS team have been a shining star in what can be a very dark abyss. THANK YOU We so appreciate your commitment and will ensure we continue to earn your support ;) SEE PHOTOS:

Our sweet little Starboy, who was returned recently with mom, got adopted along with our orphan, Doey, They were adopted out to a wonderful home with intention on being companions to a lonely horse who is absolutely thrilled to have these two little donks as her own. Go well darlings, you so deserve this life of love and happiness.
Upon rechecking one of our adopted out donkeys, it was discovered the boy had been mia for a while. Plans made to bring him back to unit safely once back home and secured. Eish
A complaint from Patensie re some stray donkeys and horses that have been roaming the town getting into trouble with locals. We advised that as soon as the community can keep eyes or contain the animals we could come and collect. Unfortunately we need assistance when it comes to collecting strays from different towns. None of the animals are in immediate danger but obviously better to have them in a safe contained property with tending owners/adopters.
Then our 3rd NIEU BETHESDA Outreach – We stopped off in Jansenville first, to deworm all four of Freds horses. Fred had sadly lost one of his mares due to the lack of food available this winter. We have assisted with some fodder and put him in touch with a local farmer where he can buy affordable, quality fodder over the more difficult months.
NIEU BETHESDA – The Team (Victoria, Mandy and ourselves) carried out a two day outreach, whereby we dewormed and treated just over 100 horses. We replaced bits and halters where necessary and wound treatment on those who needed. An overall improvement once again, especially after coming out of winter but still some worrying cases which will be followed up on in the coming months. The orphaned foal from our previous outreach was doing fantastically. Thank you to Alex and Mandy who assisted her with feed over the winter months. A huge Thank you to Bryony and Goony for allowing us to stay at your humble abode and to all the locals that welcomed us with open arms. You are so appreciated.
We also collected two surrendered donkeys. Izzy and Shirly were admitted back to the unit safe and sound. They are beautiful loving donks who are now available for adoption.
Thank you to REMAX for choosing us as your beneficiary and your generous donation of R2000!
Two more of our adopted out children, Star and Bluebird were returned to the Unit, after exhausting all possible options for them to stay where they were.
A home check for two of our specials, Chessie and Sophie, passed with flying colours. Resulting in us delivering them the following week. So happy for you too! Enjoy the good life sweethearts.
Two horses vaccinated for AHS. The period to vaccinate has come to a close for the year (end October) Please ensure yours are done.
A semi emergency removal of eight of our donkeys. We relocated to a very happy foster mom who has more than enough grazing in the meantime. Thank you Trudy! You appeared Just in the nick of time.
Four donkeys and two ponie’s hooves trimmed.
Another visit to Fairview to monitor racing procedures. Poved to be very interesting to say the least. Thirty tbs seen with only two suspect..
Our old stray, Lovingly named Sarel ;) was gelded and now ready for his retirement home. Good job boy you were way overdue..
A spot check on our last donkey carter in walmer township proved to be pleasantly surprising. Not only were his two boys in good nick, his cart was loaded with light garden refuse including bags of fodder he had bought from the local feed store for R40 per bag, supplying his two working boys (Stan and Jahmal) with that extra oomph. Well done Jackson!
Then a complaint received re condition of two horse at an inland agricultural show. Unfortunately unless relevant information is given we cannot investigate further due to lack of evidence. Please remember when issuing a complaint, we need as much information and evidence as possible. It makes our job a lot easier and less time consuming. Still waiting for requested info…
PLEASE ADVISE – We are looking to get our Sun pacer horsebox to JHB for a desperately needed overhaul. Please if you know of a company or someone driving that way who could possibly assist in towing it there, please contact us on 072 357 2505.
Received a complaint of two donkeys not looking good after we had already dewormed a few months prior. No pics once again, please try provide as much proof as possible.
An interesting meeting held to find solutions to perceived issues we are having. Let’s hope we get some assistance in the following months as a result. The unit is in need of an experienced work rider, backer? Please if you have the knowhow, get in touch.
A complaint of a tb not looking good with pics provided. Owner contacted and divulged the horse has not been well. We will monitor the situation..
A very promising test ride for our super Star (Star). Exciting times . So proud of her!
With all the goings on at the Unit we have been redoing our fencing bit by bit, post and rail, really lifting the spirits of our little piece of space. Looking good
Fifteen donkey’s hooves tendered too
A recheck on twelve horses at a ‘Sanctuary’ acceptable for now. Keeping a close eye or two ..
Horse owners trying to get us involved in civil cases once again . Please guys unless the welfare of the animal is in jeopardy we cannot get involved. Sometimes you have to resolve your own problems..
We ended the month with a worrying complaint against a re offender … Aaii…. Some people have all the excuses and just will not listen. Time is running out for you… our patience has worn thin. Here we go ...
Till next time
Carla
