The month started out with a lady who desperately had to home her three older horses. We advised her to put the oldest one (late twenties) to sleep and will be happy to try home the two 17 yr olds.. As luck would have it she found a home, let’s hope it’s an honest one..
A property check for two equid kids approved.
Three of the abandoned horses we collected last month were given the spar treatment. De-ticking manually after systemic meds administered. Manes and tails unknotted, they thoroughly enjoyed the attention, shame man..
Another lady with an old pony asking for assistance, but once again found a home before we could collect. Advised her to keep a close eye and sign a contract with the person.. The problem with rehoming an old horse is that if you don’t check in regularly things can go south very quickly and believe me, whether its friends or family , you just never know if you can trust them to do the right thing by them..
Our Suzi, the older Isuzu, had to have her gearbox replaced amongst other miner ops.. Glad to report she is finally back with us and going great! Now just for the body work ;)
A recheck on three of our ponies and two donkeys revealed the youngest would have to be booked in for a gelding sooner than later.
A colt in Joubertina needed to get gelded. Thankfully Dr Van Vuuren, from Humansdorp was more than happy to assist at a good price. Thank you Dr Piet!
Please remember if you have adopted through us, you need to advise us if you are moving yards or properties. Essentially another recheck will need to be done if we are not familiar with the space.
A complaint received about a certain individual riding an underweight horse at a certain disciplined event. After contacting the authorities the said individual had a lean horse yes because he is an extremely fit athlete. Remember not all disciplines have horses that look like showing contenders ;) Some of them are true athletes with no ounce of fat on them, just like the two legged athletes..
Jahmal brought himself in to the unit for some R & R, until Jackson collected him a few day s later.
A recheck on 4 Tbs showed slight improvement after proper dewormer and more feed.
A gelding for little man Milo, ( donkey) went as well as could be expected..
Our sweet boy Harry we sent to God, his body was old and injured. Rest in Peace sweet angel, you are forever out of pain and earthly hassles, now bask in the eternal sunshine and green fields of the afterlife.. :(
A property check for two donkeys passed with flying colours, so we homed Erin and Laurel soon after. Enjoy girls .. The grass is definitely greener on the that side ;)
We collected a lame donkey from the township on request of the owner. Basically bruised soles from overworking.. Poulticed with warm Epsom salts.. then lots of rest. Returned to owner few weeks later..
We returned the two boys who were attacked by dogs in uitenhage to their owner, as luckily only minor injuries .
Another request to home horses from the Western Cape, Closer to George SPCA, so referred to them for now otherwise advised we could assist if SPCA couldn’t.
One donkey brought into the unit to have hooves done and be dewormed.
We don’t often buy donkeys from the township, but when the need arises we abide. So one more old boy out of that life. Free to retire properly the way he deserves.

After receiving a complaint re a thin, old pony. The owner was contacted and advised, so assisted with the euthanasia the following week. Divorce, death and moving prmises often causes unnecessary stress and neglect on those who rely on us. I sometimes wish children were brought to task for wanting and wanting all the time, then when they get bored forget all about the animals. If you kid is over ten years old then they should also be responsible for their animals feeding and care. I fed my own horses as a child and continue to do so.. Rest In Peace sweet girl X I’m sorry they didn’t bother anymore…
Twenty nine horses rechecked at two yards. Happy to report all looking good!
A brief encounter with a horse and donkey out on Sardinia bay road on the way home from work. Carefully assisted in getting them back in their yard.
Another recheck on 9 ponies .. mmmm.. 3 not great..
Assisted owners, who’s donkey got attacked by the neighbours dogs. Injected with penicillin dispensed after the vet had visited.
Then the Nieu Bethesda Outreach, once again. Well done to Carli, Victoria, Mandy and Caydn for another successful outreach. 162 horses were de wormed and checked for saddle sores/mouth wounds etc. 7 donkeys were in the mix too. It’s unbelievable and really inspiring to see the difference in the condition of these animals over the past few years. Compared to the first one we did in Dec 24 their general condition has improved tremendously SEE PHOTO:
Thank you once again to the Nieu Bethesda community for looking after us so well on our stay. One donkey, Buckbuck, and one very sorrowful ‘Strokies,’ with a brushing problem (connecting his hooves to his front legs in certain gates), were both handed over to us to bring back to the Unit in order to find suitable homes.
Carli and Caydn stopped in Jansenville on the way home to de worm and check on Fred’s four horses, who looked AMAZING! It’s incredible what bit of regular deworming can do for these animals. All in all a great success :)
A call early one morning to say that one of our adopted out ponies was down with what looked like severe colic, after trying to get vets in the area to assist, with no luck , decided to go pick her up ourselves and take straight to the vet. The prognosis was unfortunately not good at all. A very solid, large impaction. Unfortunately after rectal and drip we still lost her that night. Rest in Peace darling, so sorry for your suffering..
Our manky boy Ringo, finally had his appointment to remove his sarcoid/growth. Went well. Lets hope and pray with daily bandaging we finally rid him of his extra appendage ;) The problem is his immune system has been so compromised with his sarcoptic mange and sarcoid both ailments proving too respond very stubbornly to treatment. We got you though boy.. just hang in there..
The slightly entitled donk that was surrendered to us from Nieu Bethesda, Buck Buck, was delivered to his new home with Ben and Luke as companions. What a Mr though ;) Good luck boy, we know you’ll be fine.
