A bit of a quiet month, also obviously the shortest month of the year though. We started off with the relocating of one of the little Graaf Reinette filly to her new home. Go well girl, here’s to fun and games with your mom in your new home!

A complaint of a very lame donkey sorted when we opened up a hidden abscess on the hind hoof. Soaked in warm Epsom salts water after . Happy donkey and owner!
The Next complaint was of a horse with mange, ticks and sarcoids. We spoke with the owner who was a little resistant at first but then seemed to take in our advice on best options for the ticks and mange. The sarcoids seem to be ok for now but explained needs fly repellant as well.
We were then asked to assist a gentleman with treating the injuries of his two horses that got caught up in two nasty incidents. With our experience, time and resources we were able to help heal the wounds beautifully it took a month but hopefully both will go home next week After approval from vet check later this week . Once again EPSOM SALTS to the rescue!
Three youngsters administered with the AHS (African Horse Sickness) vaccine . Yes wrong time of year but because they are young they need it to build up immunity, also with what is happening in the rural areas inland, we need to be extremely vigilant.
We treated an old, retired pony for ticks and greasy heal. Not too terrible thankfully and sorted after two more visits.

A lovely brick foundation for our new water trough was put together by the talented Talent! Thanks Sonja for organizing just in case someone decided to steal that too.
Then we get back to the dreaded situation of two of our ponies being placed/given/sold to another owner without our consent. After doing our rechecks we realized they were not where they should have been and when followed up with original adopter it was discovered they were on another undesirable property nearby. We managed to collect the old boy with a little resistance but we had all the documentation in place. The youngster however has been sold on. We will get him back too though just has to be done delicately. The old boy was riddled with ticks and bad eye situation , we are so sorry boy, and feel like we have failed you but after we sort your eye out Im sure we will find you the kind of retirement home you deserve! And yes there will be repercussions!
A bitter sweet day was celebrated for our very special groom Tom. We had a lovely farewell to wish him all the best for his retirement. Tom, we are so grateful to you for your endless effort and pleasant demeanor. Always willing to do whatever it takes, no matter the time or place. Never complaining and always with a smile on your face. We will miss our adventures together and may you keep bringing joy to those around you as long as you live! We thank you for you dedicated service and wish you only the best in your golden years!! Hamba kakuhle Tata Tom!

There has been confirmed cases of Horses dying of African Horse Sickness in rural areas near Umtata and Grahamstown. Please be vigilant with midge repellent methods and ensure all your horses are up to date with their vaccinations. If your horse is at a livery/another property follow up on dates and batches.
We received a reputable tip on someone in kragga kama giving away ponies to an undesirable farmer , we think it was prevented after posting a request to rather surrender to us. Please if you ever hear of people ‘giving ‘ their animals away , try to convince them otherwise , just don’t understand how most of the world’s population just don’t give a damn L
Another sarcoid complaint, this time a massive one. Visited and advised if not managed other options will need to be considered. Sarcoids are a difficult to treat, there are many different kinds that respond to different treatments. It can be a laborious and disheartening task and if you don’t find something that works to at least manage the growths then the quality of the animal’s life needs to be seriously considered. Obviously a lot of factors are taken into consideration when doing so ie location, size , aggressive or not etc.
A re adoption of our sweet boy, Baleka. Unfortunately his heartbroken mom couldn’t keep him anymore but thankfully got to stay at his yard with new mom and bff, go well boy!

A complaint of horses covered in ticks, followed up by a phone call to owner and weekend visit to check treatment is carried out as owner claimed.
I went on almost a week’s leave for the first time since Megan passed. Stan managed fine, just please be patient with whats app messages. We have terrible signal here at the unit so if it is urgent please phone us on the normal line, otherwise we will reply when we can. It’s just the two of us and sometimes the odd message does get lost in the matrix..
Then our sweet, not so little, Lincoln who we treated for tetanus as a baby finally came in to be snipped. All went well ,mom was worried for a bit but very glad to have him back with less testosterone. Go well boy so glad you grew up strong and healthy like you deserve!
We had a suspected colic of one of our own but was quickly nipped in the bud by vet visit. All good now thankfully..
Lastly, trying to raise funds is an on-going pressure but a VERY EXCITING Fundraiser is going to be happening at the Grass Roof on the 19th March! The KELSTON WILBUR WINE TASTING AND FUN DAY.
