March '23

We started off the month with Yster, officially being handed over for retirement. He was one of the donkeys involved in the most recent donkey cart accident outside the airport . Settling in well and is now available for his forever home.

Our old boy, Zephyr, was checked out by Dr Hilda and thankfully his eye /eyesight should be fine with medication prescribed. Bugger to put the eye drops in though..not one of my favourite things.

Youngster received his second  AHS vaccine.

Then a TEAMS meeting with SANRAL  authorities and other interested parties in order to discuss the struggle of stray animals on South African roads. Difficult problem to solve, with most fencing put up being stolen or vandalized and lack of accountability from those in charge of herding animals off and away from roads. The best suggestion in my opinion was to identify problem areas from data /stats gathered, then  put up more speed deterrents in those high risk areas.  Trying to urge drivers to drive more carefully.. As ultimately  ends up being the drivers responsibility /problem.

Six ponies and Six donkeys hooves done

Our new mommy Brie and baby Charlie have moved to their new foster home safe and sound. They will keep an elderly boy company and entertained no doubt ;)

Tick grease administered after complaint received. Yes it is an on going chore that needs to be done on a regular basis.  Will follow up in a month or so.

Something different – Chris and I had fun decanting and bottling his donated honey. Chris and Brett have donated 10 kg to the UNIT in orger to help[ raise funds! Thank you guys!. It is DELICIOUS and available at the ECHCU if you are interested. From Sardinia bay so as local as can bee… ;)

A new chapter in the Wilbur Diaries:  Welcome Snowy!  She moved in , strutting her stuff nonchalantly, slightly bewildering the love struck boys (Wilbur and Junior). To be honest , I think they remember each other from old ‘carting’ days as they were all originally from the Walmer township.

We are trying to send some second hand tack to  East London,  for local organisations in the area, If by any chance,  you are going that way and have space for an extra few bags , please let us know.

Two donkeys and one pony trimmed and vaccinated .

Two Lucky fellas, Peter and Jamal, were adopted into a green haven with more than enough their hearts could desire. Lucky Boys J Don’t take advantage now behave like good children please ;)

Alicia, from Equine- Librium and her students were warmly received to give some free physio sessions.  Our temporary patients were very glad indeed and it has  no doubt assisted in the healing process.

The two patients that came in for treatment the beginning of February healed up beautifully in a little over a month(EPSOM SALTS ) One has a slightly more long term issue but both wounds  healed beautifully. Go well beautiful kids!

One of our more anxious adoptees needed Stan’s magic touch, as was not having her hooves done by anybody else. Thanks Stan!

Recheck on two feisty mares enjoying their new career!

Sadly one of happy stories has come to an end. Remembering that happiness comes only from knowing sadness and both need each other to exist. Our little Buks, who was found in atrocious conditions, with severe skin and trust issues finally went to God after complications from his previous life. (Stones in intestines) We just want to Thank you Charmaine, for allowing him to trust and know love again in his last few years of his life.  You gave him his dignity back, Thank you!  RIP sweet boy so glad you knew you were loved.

BUKS  September 2021 : With committed volunteer Brett , remembering  he wasn’t the easiest patient to treat ;)

December 2022 – Happy Days!

Little old Shadow was moved to her last stay before travelling over the rainbow.. She will be monitored until it is time. Getting all the care and attention she will need in this time and has  settled happily.

A complaint received of two abandoned souls. Not quite the case after check up , but will be checking and monitoring circumstances through winter.

THE KELSTON WILBUR WINE TASTING AND FUNDAY  What a day! Firstly, Thank you to Marizaane and Nicky (Grass ROOf) for creating this outstanding event in aid of ECHCU and SANCCOB.  We can’t thank you enough, your endless energy and passion for animals is such an inspiration XX  They managed to raise the substantial amount of 73K !! then divided it equally into ECHCU and SANCCOB Bank Accounts . Woohoo!! We would also like to thank the following people for making the day a success without you we could not have done it , so THANK YOU!!

Then we lost a very special boy, who we discovered was badly compromised by both  EEV (Equine Encephalosis Virus) and acute Billiary. The symptoms came on very suddenly and unfortunately there is no vaccine against EEV available. The virus is transported by the same culicoides midges that transmit African Horse Sickness, so please be vigilant and keep protecting your horses. Build up their inmmunity/vitality with supplements too if possible. Unfortunately ticks are always around and you never know which ones are infected as parasite can lie dormant for long periods in their host. RIP Precious Boy. We are so sorry.

One of our adopted out OTTbs gave us a scare, with a nasty infection. Thankfully  all sorted by the vets at hand.

A complaint received from Uitenhage re the beating of donkeys.  PLEASE NOTE If you see any animal cruelty,  Try your best to get footage if at all possible , even if captured after the incident.  The description of the perpetrators, carts and donkeys  will all help tremendously to build a case against them.

Six donkeys dewormed and hooves tendered to.

Work/management  in the paddocks never ends . Thank you to Sonja for bringing Talent, with the chainsaw to do his thing. We are getting there slowly but surely!

Then came Zanni‘s(‘Pumpkin’ as most know her ) day to move to her new home. A special case for a special girl. She is just one of those horses who loves to be loved but not to be ridden. She gets too anxious, who knows what may have happened in her past but hey we love her still the same. Yes we could have ridden her more and ‘made’ her ridable, but why?  Just like some horses love to jump so some horses don’t , they are individuals. Figure out what makes you and your partner most happy together then do that J Long story but she has gone to a home where she is wanted purely as a companion for someone to love and care for and to be loved and reminisce with.. Go well Pumpkin , will miss you dearly XX

All the residents at the unit dewormed and hooves trimmed.

There were three grey donkeys roaming on N2 near Crossways. They have been moved to a safe place for now but please contact us if you know who they may belong too..

One colt brought in for gelding, managed to take our new groom, Sipho, for quite a ride on collection! Donkey wrangling 101 ;)

Rabies vaccines given to UNIT residents . Please remember to VACCINATE your loved ones against RABIES.

Replaced harnessing for Jackson’s donkeys in Walmer.  Also vaccinated all his Donks against Rabies.

Thirteen donkey hooves Trimmed and 9d vaccinated

Lastly dewormed another three donkeys and cross breed at request of their owner.

Well till next time,

Carla
