Well quite a month.. Started off on a recheck on two donkeys that were thought to be made into sausage meat. All good and well though thankfully. Will continue with follow ups just in case.
A property check for our sweet Star Boy and his lovely mom, Sophie. All good and delivered them a week later. Very happy all round and little Star boy has already made friends with the sheep. Well at least he thinks so ;)
The ongoing Court case, re the gelding of a horse by a layman, was remanded but going to trial next month. This poor horse had to be euthanased after the ‘procedure’ went very wrong, go figure. Please note, if you need help gelding stallions contact us. There is always a way to ensure this type of thing doesn’t happen.
Our beautiful Phantom is a back at the Unit. Almost ready to be backed after fulfilling his duty as a companion to a lonely mare for a couple of months.
Not so little Scattebol and Bun Bun were delivered to their new home in Alexandria. Go well boys! Grass as far as your eyes can see!
One of our older Tbs adopted out was kindly PTS after suffering a stroke of some sort. Rest In Peace Boy X
An orphaned foal who was taken in by a lady in Queenstown that seemed to be getting weaker. Advised to put glucose or honey in 2% cow’s milk in a bowl. Luckily the foal managed to drink and pulled through.
We were then asked to assist Animal Anti Cruelty and SPCA Uitenhage in confiscating two donkeys that have been abused, overworked and underfed by the same guy for almost a year now (that we know of) They finally found him and the two donkeys were admitted straight to the Unit. Vetted and dewormed and in for some good R&R until the court case. Well done Mariaan, Yogi and Karien for being so persistent and finally catching him in the act.
An unexpected stress by TERS to give all relative details in 24 hours or they will demand their funding back. 40k plus they issued us during covid but that was five years ago already! Aargh anyway stressful and unnecessary but think we got them everything they needed. Let’s hope so.

Exchanged old harnessing for new harnessing with one of our responsible donkey cart owners in kwanobuhle. His donkeys are looking good. Well done Wanda!
Another property check for two more donkeys, just waiting for shelter and camps to be finalised then ready for two lucky children.

Received a complaint about a very thin mare with foal at foot in Jansenville. Thank you Mandy for getting owners details so we could visit on our way up to Nieu Bethesda.
Six horses of concern that we visited last month, are doing better with LOTS more feed. Why does it need to take a visit from us to get it through to you though? We will keep on checking and infuriating you if need be. We are here for the horses. They do not deserve to be neglected no matter how supposedly ‘hard’ your situation is. If you can’t look after them properly then you shouldnt have any.
Our little old man, Benji, had his teeth tendered too at the Unit. Hopefully he will pick up weight properly now before going to his forever home.
A miniature pony being kept in a residential area in Cholchester was of some concern but after visiting and speaking directly with the owner, it appears they had gone the correct route by getting permission from their local authorities and signed permission from neighbours. Out of our hands as the pony is well looked after.

Our Race day was a smashing success! Thank you to Dorrie and Mark Sham for organising the whole event. A whopping 420k was raised in total, you are all absolute Superstars !! We had a call of concern re a very colicky pony on a farm out of town. Luckily the complainant new a thing or two about horses and tried to help as best they could. After a few days and no improvement, euthanasia was suggested. Unfortunately the owner inclined to disagree. We were then asked to go out and evaluate as no one would be at the farm for next two days. Once we arrived the severity of the case was obvious. We called a vet straight away , under the owner’s consent. Luckily the lovely vets from Ikhala Veterinary clinic were able to assist within the hour. They immediately made the call to euthanase, they discussed with owner who finally agreed . Rest in Peace sweetheart. You are out of pain now.
Sadly a very special boy we had helped heal recently passed away suddenly over night. Rest in Peace Habib. You were really one of a kind and we will always love you L
Five donkey hooves and two pony’s tendered to.
Then off to Nieu Bethsda for our second outreach initiated and carried through by Mandy and Victoria from the Nieu Bethesda Horse Welfare Initiative. We stopped off in Jansenville on our way to visit a very skinny mare with foal at foot. We made contact with the owner who was very cooperative and grateful to receive dewormers and new numnahs for his horses. The mare in question had thankfully improved in condition but he admitted that obtaining extra feed was difficult for him at times. We will visit again next time.
NIEU BETHESDA : We spent two days deworming , treating wounds, exchanging horrible tack and removing where necessary. Donations of feed and fodder were also donated which the horses thoroughly enjoyed. Please see full list of all sponsors and donators in our next facebook post. There were SO Many, Thank you! We saw roughly 180 horses and donkeys in total. A lot of them had improved considerably in condition after deworming and recent rains.

Two stray donkeys on old cape road taken in for safe keeping . Thankfully the owner responded in 24hrs and after a property inspection to assess where they escaped, owner took them back home safe and sound.
A Recheck on three crossbreeds and two Tbs looking acceptable for now.
